 The 10% Solution
Some neurologists believe that the average human being
only uses about 10% of his or her brain's capabilities. The same might
be said of law firms and small businesses relative to their use of the
software they own. Typically, businesses buy software in bundles. They
want one program in particular, but the software maker throws in 6 or 7
other programs. And the company's employees have no idea how to use them.
Sometimes they don't even know what they have.
JurInnov recently helped a law firm discover the power of some of the software
they already owned, and solved their problem for about 10% of the cost of a custom
software solution.
The firm had previously engaged JurInnov to help identify employees who had
violated the firm's security system and copied files and data. The firm
wanted to set up a pre-emptive system, one which would make it more difficult
for employees to copy and download files. The truth is, many small to mid-size
law firms store their documents on folders on their network and any users of the
system have easy access.
JurInnov performed an audit of the firm's software and found that they already
owned Microsoft SharePoint. So instead of creating a whole new system, JurInnov
was able to customize SharePoint to upgrade the firm's security procedures for
document storage. JurInnov set up a system for checking files in and out of the
network that would leave an audit trail and used SharePoint to establish other
storage and retrieval protocols.
The firm had expected to spend around $100,000. Instead they spent under $10,000.
Incidentally, JurInnov was also able to show the firm how to use SharePoint to
audit conflict of interest issues for new matters. By capturing relevant
information from every case the firm is handling, SharePoint can identify
and red flag potential conflict of interest issues.
JurInnov's philosophy is that software capability is a terrible thing to waste.
